Vaping is more effective than nicotine patches...here's why
Although most smokers are looking to quit, most of us have tried most of the options out there... and failed. One of the most well known ways most have tried to quit smoking with are nicotine patches, which emit a constant dose on nicotine and so keep the cravings at bay.
However in the last few years more and more smokers have turned to E-Cigarettes instead of patches to help them get off cigarettes. What's more E-Cigarettes are helping more of these smokers finally getting away from smoking.
Why are smokers using the E-Cigarettes instead of patches then, and what about them helps smokers more?
What is a vape?
A vape is an electronic device (short for vapouriser) which stores and vapourises liquid with nicotine in. This vapour is then inhaled and the user gets a nicotine hit and is otherwise known as ‘vaping’. Vapes are also known as; e-cigarettes, e-vaporizers, e-cigs or cig-a-likes. What they all have in common is that they use e-liquids inside them.
Like any other product that helps smokers, the point of a Vape is to get you nicotine. What makes Vapes unique though is the method of nicotine delivery, which is the vapour. As you breathe in the vapour you get the same feeling as when you smoke a cigarette, the nicotine is even absorbed in the same way as with a cigarette. Because of this using an e-cigarette can feel much more familiar to a smoker.
What is a nicotine patch?
A nicotine patch is like an adhesive bandage, it attaches to your skin and gives you small but consistent amounts of nicotine, this goes through your skin and enters your bloodstream.
The patch is supposed to be effective due to the fact that the amount of nicotine slowly but gradually reduces, allowing your body to not be so dependent on the drug. However, there are downsides to using a nicotine patch. Due to the constant feed of nicotine a patch provided it can be easy to absorb too much nicotine. Some possible side effects of this include; nausea, skin irritation, dizziness, racing heartbeat, sleep problems, headaches, muscle aches and stiffness.
What are the benefits of using a vape?
The biggest advantage a Vape has is feeling (and sometimes looking) like a cigarette.
A large part of this can be put down to the fact that Vapes feel like a cigarette. What many people forget about the smoking addiction is that not only is it a chemical one, but a psychological one too. Many smokers have spent the majority of their life putting a cigarette in their mouth, and that habit can be extremely hard to break. With a Vape though smokers still get that hand to mouth action and the nicotine hit on the back of their throat, making it much easier to switch over.
However what the Vape doesn't give you though are the 4000 chemicals and 50+ carcinogens that are found in tobacco.
A normal cigarette produces tar and carbon monoxide, two of the most damaging elements when it comes to tobacco smoke. Fortunately, a vape does not burn tobacco or produce either of these elements. Instead, a vape works by heating up liquids that usually contain; nicotine, propylene glycol (or vegetable glycerine) and various flavourings.
This lack of chemicals and carcinogens then is why Public Health England says that "e-cigarettes are at least 95% less harmful than cigarettes".
Due to this lack of harmful chemicals there are a variety of different health benefits to using a vape over other things (such as patches and gum), these include; better oral health, skin health, circulation, lung capacity and improved senses.
So, all in all, e-cigarettes and vapes help manage nicotine cravings, they should be used as and when needed to help stop the cravings and the individual must completely stop smoking to get the full effect.
