Direct To Lung (DTL) vapes are designed to work by pressing a button which activates a the battery and vapourizing technology. This creates more of a “push” of vapour instead of the “draw” that you get with a MTL e-cigarette or normal cigarette. Typically, DTL vaping devices produce a lot more vapour which is forced into your lungs. For some vapers, this is preferred as they like to exhale more “clouds”. But the more clouds a device produces does not necessarily mean a better vaping experience. It’s more for show than for mimicking that satisfaction of smoking.

As an ex-smoker for 20 years, all the DTL devices I have tried feel like there was just “too much” vapour being pushed too far into my lungs and would make me cough. So even though I was a heavy smoker, I much prefer the natural draw of an MTL vape compared to the DTL device. So for a heavy smoker, an MTL e-cigarette feels more familiar in its draw and the way you inhale compared to your normal cigarettes. If it is your first time vaping, the transition from cigarettes to a mouth to lung style vape should be a relatively easy to get used to and you will be enjoying vaping a lot sooner.

Vapes can also be classified as “Closed” or “Open” systems and relates back to MTL and DTL. Closed e-cigarettes relate to Mouth To Lung systems where the nicotine e-liquid is already sealed in the refill or pod. They are designed for someone who is new to vaping, for heavier smokers and people who want an easy to use vape. Inside the vape pod, you will find the heating element (also referred to as a coil or atomizer) and the nicotine e-liquid and flavouring. Once you finish the pod, you simply throw it away and attached a new refill. Nothing else to replace, no parts to clean or maintain and no e-liquid to refill.

“Open” systems refer to the Direct To Lung devices which have a battery, tank, coil, a mouthpiece and the e-liquid as interchangeable elements. Using an open system requires much more maintenance than a closed system. You attach the coil to the tank, fill the tank with e-liquid and then replace the mouthpiece to get started and then repeat once your tank is empty.

Open system batteries tend to be much more powerful as they produce a larger amount of vapour. Due to this extra power, you will find that you will need to replace coils on a regular basis as they can burn out operating at higher battery levels. Again, open systems are great if you want to block out the sun with your vapour, but overwhelming if you a looking for a similar smoking sensation to cigarettes.

WHICH E-LIQUIDS ARE BEST
FOR HEAVY SMOKERS?

Now we have established that Mouth To Lung Closed e-cigarettes and vapes are the best choice for a heavy smoker looking to vape for the first time, it is important to understand about e-liquids. Beyond the infinite amount of flavours of e-liquids to choose from, let’s explain the basic ingredients that make up an e-liquid. Unlike a cigarette that contains thousands of harmful chemicals and carcinogens, e-liquids tend to be made up of 4 ingredients – Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), Food flavours and Nicotine. When vapourized by an e-cigarette, these ingredients create a flavoursome, smoke-like vapour designed to mimic the smoke from a normal cigarette.

It is important to understand what PG and VG do. Propylene Glycol is thinner (less viscous) and vapourizes at lower temperatures. It also creates the “throat” hit in an e-cigarette. Vegetable Glycerin is a thicker liquid (more viscous) and needs to be heated at a higher temperature. VG is what creates the visible cloud. So the combination of the 2 can create quite a varying range of vaping experiences. More PG in your e-liquid means a greater and more realistic throat hit whereas an e-liquid with more VG delivers more vapour but less throat hit.

We have found that a higher PG concentration in an e-liquid creates the most realistic smoking sensation for a heavy smoker. That is why SMOKO only uses an 80% PG / 20% VG mix in the e-liquids we use in our vape kits for heavy smokers.

Beyond the PG/VG mix of your e-liquids, the flavour will also be a consideration. When you look on many online vape stores, you will find an infinite range of weird and wonderous flavour combinations. Generally these are designed for people using DTL systems and who have been vaping for a while. However, if you look at the range of flavours of cigarettes, you essentially only have 3 choices; tailor-made tobacco, rolling tobacco or menthol. These 3 flavours represent over 95% of all cigarette and tobacco products that are consumed by adult smokers.
