This ban will include cigarettes or hand rolling tobacco with:

Menthol flavouring was first added to cigarettes in the 1920s and was previously marketed as being healthier, cooler and more refreshing than traditional tobacco cigarettes. Due to the clever marketing of tobacco companies over the decades, many smokers think that menthol cigarettes are safer than normal ones. This has obviously been disproven.

You may have heard the rumours that menthol cigarettes will be banned in the UK this year. But the rumours are true! As of the 20^th of May 2020, menthol cigarettes and any other tobacco products that have a “characterising flavour” other than tobacco will be prohibited to be sold in the UK.  

This ban does not include menthol flavoured e-cigarettes or vapes. Switching from menthol cigarettes to a mint flavoured e-cigarette will definitely be on the cards for many smokers.

The regulators in the EU passed new laws in 2016 that created further regulations on how cigarettes and tobacco products can be sold. Called the TPD or Tobacco Products Directive, these new laws included the introduction of health warning images on cigarette packs, plain packaging, increased fines for selling cigarettes to minors and the future ban on the sale of menthol, dual-flavoured or non-tobacco flavoured cigarettes and tobacco products. These laws were introduced to further discourage adult smokers from smoking traditional tobacco products and cigarettes.

For those people who only smoke menthol cigarettes, there is some good news about the menthol cigarette ban. Menthol flavoured e-cigarettes are NOT going to be banned and will continue to be allowed to be sold in the UK and across the EU. As part of the EU Tobacco Product Directive laws that came into effect in 2016, the sale of menthol cigarettes are due to be banned on the 20^th of May 2020 in the UK. That means that many of your local shops and news agents will be running their stocks out as the ban approaches.

Like any illegal products, the sale of Menthol Cigarettes will become illegal on Wednesday May 20^th 2020 and heavy fines and possible jail time will be issued to retailers and tobacco companies who continue to stock or sell menthol cigarettes in the UK or anywhere in the EU. The policing of the ban will more than likely fall on the shoulders of the local Trading Standards offices in each area around the UK.

Menthol cigarettes and other “non-tobacco” flavoured cigarettes like dual flavoured cigarettes will be banned across the entire UK and in all member states in the EU from Wednesday May 20^th, 2020. Some states in the US will be banning the sale of menthol cigarettes in 2020. Canada banned menthol cigarettes in October 2017.
