While studies in America have found chemicals known to be harmful in a multitude of E-Cigarettes, the regulation in the UK and EU prevents many of these from being included in E-Cigarettes made in the UK. Diacetyl, for example, is banned as a flavouring for e-liquids, and acetoin and pentanedione are also prohibited as they can turn into diacetyl in the e-liquid.

THE LINK BETWEEN E-CIGARETTES AND POPCORN LUNG
A study by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health claims 75% of flavoured e-cigarettes contain diacetyl, a flavouring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease including “pop-corn lung”.
The test was based on 51 types of flavoured e-cigarettes and liquids sold by some of the leading brands in the US, with diacetyl being found in over 75% of those products that were tested.
According to Assistant Professor and lead author Joseph Allen;
“recognition of the hazards associated with inhaling flavouring chemicals started with ‘popcorn lung’ over a decade ago. However diacetyl and other related flavouring chemicals are used in many other flavours beyond butter-flavoured popcorn, including fruit flavours, alcohol flavours, and, we learned in our study, candy-flavoured e-cigarettes.”
At present there are over 7,000 varieties of e-liquids and e-cigarettes that are sold on the market at present and currently there are no regulations on the ingredients that can be used in e-cigarettes. As well, the majority of these e-cigarettes brands and in e-liquids also use Chinese-made ingredients.
