Most flavourful vape juice

When it comes to identifying the most flavourful vape juice, the perfect choice varies based on personal preference, but certain e-liquids consistently rise to the top. Flavourful vape juices are typically those that combine high-quality ingredients with well-balanced flavour profiles, providing a rich and satisfying experience. Popular choices among vapers include dessert flavours like vanilla and caramel, fruity blends such as mango or berry medleys, and complex concoctions like tobacco with hints of honey or coffee. Brands like SMOKO are renowned for their flavourful offerings, often praised for their ability to deliver intense and authentic taste with each puff. Ultimately, the most flavourful vape juice is one that tantalises your taste buds and provides a smooth, enjoyable vaping experience!

What is Vape Juice Made Of?

Vape juice, also known as e-liquid or e-juice, is primarily composed of four key ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerine (VG), nicotine, and flavourings. PG is a colourless and odourless liquid with a thinner consistency that helps to carry the flavour and provides a stronger throat hit, mimicking the sensation of smoking. VG is a liquid with a thicker consistency derived from vegetable oils, contributing to the vapour production and adding a slight sweetness to the mix. Nicotine, an optional ingredient, varies in concentration and is included for those seeking the familiar sensation of smoking. Flavourings, which can be either natural or artificial, are added to create a wide range of tastes, from fruity and dessert-like to menthol and tobacco. These components work together to create a satisfying and customisable vaping experience.

What Flavourings Are Used in E-liquids?

The flavourings used in e-liquids made in the UK and other countries with great regulation use the finest ingredients. These can be a mix of natural and artificial ingredients designed to mimic a wide variety of tastes. These flavourings can range from simple, single-note profiles like strawberry, mint, or vanilla, to more complex combinations that replicate desserts, beverages, or even tobacco blends. Natural flavourings are derived from real food sources, ensuring an authentic taste, while artificial flavourings are chemically synthesized to achieve flavours that may not be easily sourced from nature. These components are meticulously formulated to provide vapers with a diverse palette of flavours that can enhance their vaping experience. Some popular flavour profiles include fruity blends like mango or mixed berries, creamy desserts such as custard or cheesecake, and refreshing options like menthol or mint.

Does the Type of Nicotine Affect the Vape Juice Flavour?

Yes, the type of nicotine used in vape juice can significantly affect its flavor, as can the concentrations of nicotine. There are primarily two types of nicotine found in e-liquids: freebase nicotine and nicotine salts. Freebase nicotine is the more traditional form and tends to deliver a harsher throat hit, which can sometimes overshadow the flavours of the e-liquid at higher concentrations. In contrast, salt nicotine, which is derived from natural tobacco leaves, offers a smoother throat hit at higher nicotine concentrations, allowing the flavours to come through more clearly and intensely. Additionally, nicotine salts are often preferred for their quicker absorption and longer-lasting effects. Thus, the choice between freebase nicotine and nicotine salts can influence not only the strength of the nicotine hit but also the overall flavour profile and vaping experience.

Are there vape flavourings known to be harmful?

Yes, certain vape flavourings have been identified as potentially harmful, particularly when inhaled over extended periods. Ingredients such as diacetyl, acetoin, and acetyl propionyl, which are sometimes used to create creamy or buttery flavours, have been linked to respiratory issues like bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as "popcorn lung" (1). This condition causes scarring of the tiny air sacs in the lungs, leading to reduced respiratory function.

Other flavourings that produce cinnamaldehyde (used for cinnamon flavours) and benzaldehyde (used for cherry or almond flavours) have also raised health concerns due to their potential to irritate the respiratory tract and cause cell damage. The biggest chemical to be concerned about is vitamin E acetate which is being used to mix chemicals like THC (the active component in cannabis) into vape liquids, and vitamin E acetate has been linked to every case of E-Cigarette and Vaping Associated Lung Injury (EVALI) (2). While many reputable manufacturers have removed these harmful chemicals from their e-liquids, it's essential for consumers to research and choose products from trusted brands that prioritise safety and transparency in their ingredient lists.

How does the vape coil affect the flavour of my vape juice?

The vape coil plays a critical role in affecting the flavour of your vape juice because it is the component that heats the e-liquid, turning it into vapour. A high-quality coil can enhance the flavour by evenly heating the e-liquid, ensuring consistent vapour production and preventing burnt or harsh tastes. Different coil materials, such as stainless steel, kanthal, and nickel, can also influence the flavour profile, as they heat differently and interact with the e-liquid in unique ways. The presence of a ceramic coil can mute the flavour a little, but there is evidence that ceramic coils are more stable and don't degrade like metal coils do and so could provide a safer vaping experience. Additionally, the coil's resistance level impacts the vaping experience; lower resistance coils (for sub-ohm vaping) typically produce more vapour and a richer flavour, while higher resistance coils may deliver a more subdued taste. Over time, coils can accumulate residue from the e-liquid, leading to a diminished flavour, so regular cleaning or replacing of the coil is essential to maintain the best possible taste from your vape juice.

Why Has My Vape Juice Lost Flavour?

There are several common reasons why vape juice may lose its flavour over time. One of the main factors is oxidation, where exposure to air causes the flavour molecules in the e-liquid to break down and diminish in intensity. Another reason could be improper storage, such as leaving the vape juice in direct sunlight or in fluctuating temperatures, which can accelerate the degradation of flavour. Additionally, using an old or worn-out coil in your vape device can contribute to flavour loss, as the coil may not vaporise the e-liquid efficiently or evenly. Furthermore, if the vape juice contains nicotine, prolonged exposure to light and air can also cause nicotine oxidation, altering both the taste and colour of the e-liquid. To maintain the flavour of your vape juice for longer periods, it's essential to store it in a cool, dark place, replace coils regularly, and ensure proper sealing of bottles to minimise exposure to air.

Is It Safe to Use Out of Date Vape Liquid?

Using out-of-date vape liquid is generally not recommended due to potential safety concerns and reduced quality of the product. Over time, vape juice can degrade, leading to changes in flavour, consistency, and potentially the chemical composition of the liquid. Expired vape juice may also become less effective in delivering nicotine or flavours as intended. Moreover, the degradation of ingredients over time could pose health risks, especially if the vape juice has been improperly stored or exposed to unfavorable conditions such as heat or sunlight. While the exact risks may vary depending on the specific ingredients and how far past the expiration date the vape juice is, it's generally advisable to dispose of expired vape liquid responsibly and replace it with fresh e-liquid to ensure a safe and enjoyable vaping experience.

How long does vape juice last?

Vape juice typically has a shelf life of one to two years from the date of manufacture, depending on how well it is stored. The longevity of vape juice is influenced by factors such as exposure to light, heat, and air. To maximise its shelf life, it should be stored in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed in its original container to prevent oxidation. Over time, the flavour and nicotine potency can degrade, leading to a less enjoyable vaping experience. Expired e-liquid exhibits signs it has gone bad; this includes changes in colour, a noticeable loss of flavour, or a strange taste. While it may not be harmful to use expired vape juice, the quality and safety of the vaping experience are compromised, so it is generally recommended to replace old e-liquid with a fresh supply.

What are shortfill e-liquids?

Shortfill e-liquids are large bottles of nicotine-free e-liquid that allow vapers to add their own nicotine shot for the perfect nicotine strength. Typically sold in bottles that have extra space, shortfill varieties come in sizes such as 50ml of e-liquid in a 60ml bottle or 100ml in a 120ml bottle. This extra space is designed for the addition of nicotine shots, also known as nic shots, which can be mixed into the e-liquid to achieve the desired nicotine strength, and these can be nic salt shots or freebase nicotine shots, depending on your preference. This flexibility allows vapers to customise their nicotine type and levels according to personal preference. The popularity of shortfill e-liquids has grown due to regulations like the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) in the UK and EU, which limit the sale of nicotine-containing e-liquids to 10ml bottles. Shortfills offer a convenient way to purchase larger quantities of e-liquid while still complying with these regulations.

Are UK Made E-liquids the Best?

UK-made e-liquids are often considered among the best in the industry due to stringent manufacturing standards and regulations. The UK imposes strict guidelines through the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR), ensuring that all e-liquids meet high safety and quality benchmarks. These regulations cover everything from ingredient purity to accurate labeling and child-resistant packaging. Additionally, many UK manufacturers use high-grade ingredients and advanced production techniques to create e-liquids with consistent flavour profiles and reliable performance. Renowned UK brands like Dinner Lady, Vampire Vape, and Twelve Monkeys have garnered international acclaim for their innovative and flavourful offerings. While the "best" e-liquid is subjective and depends on personal preference, UK-made e-liquids are widely respected for their quality and safety standards, making them a top choice for many vapers.

Can I put my favourite vape juice in a disposable vape?

While it might seem convenient to refill a disposable vape with your favorite vape juice, it is generally not recommended. Disposable vapes are designed for single use and come pre-filled with e-liquid, with no provision for refilling. Attempting to open or refill a disposable vape can lead to potential issues such as leaks, malfunction, and compromised device safety. Additionally, the components in disposable vapes, such as the coil and wick, are not designed for long-term use and may not provide a satisfying experience with additional e-liquid. For those who prefer a specific vape juice, it is advisable to use a refillable vape device, which allows for easy refilling and a longer lifespan, providing a better overall vaping experience.

It is worth being aware that disposable vapes have been contributing to huge amounts of waste due to the difficulty of recycling them. The lithium-ion batteries contained in disposable vapes are largely capable of running hundreds of charge/discharge cycles (3), but instead are being used once and then discarded. This environmental impact, in addition to the increase in youth vaping, has led to the UK government deciding to ban disposable vapes in 2025

What Strength Vape Juice Should I Choose?

Choosing the right strength vape juice depends on your nicotine needs and vaping habits. If you're a heavy smoker transitioning to vaping, you might prefer a higher nicotine strength, such as 12 mg/ml to 20 mg/ml, to satisfy your cravings effectively. Moderate smokers might find a mid-range strength, around 6 mg/ml to 12 mg/ml, suitable for their needs. Light smokers or those who prefer less nicotine might opt for lower strengths, such as 3 mg/ml or even nicotine-free options. Additionally, the type of device you use can influence your choice; for instance, higher nicotine strengths are often better suited for lower-powered devices like pod systems, while sub-ohm tanks and high-powered devices typically pair well with lower nicotine levels due to the increased vapour production. Ultimately, the goal is to find a balance that provides a satisfying experience without causing discomfort or nicotine overload.

Can You Put Any Liquid in a Vape?

No, you cannot put just any liquid in a vape. Vape devices are specifically designed to work with e-liquids formulated for vaping, which contain a mix of Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerine (VG), nicotine (optional), and flavourings. Using non-vape liquids, such as essential oils, alcohol, or other non-designated substances, can be dangerous and may damage your device. These liquids are not intended for inhalation and can produce harmful chemicals when heated. Additionally, they can cause the device to malfunction, leading to potential leaks, clogs, or even more serious mechanical failures. Always use e-liquids from reputable sources that are specifically made for vaping to ensure safety and optimal performance of your vape device.

Can you use any vape juice in any vape?

No, you cannot use any vape juice in any vape, as compatibility between the vape device and the type of e-liquid is crucial for an optimal vaping experience. Different devices are designed to work best with specific e-liquid formulations. For instance, high-powered sub-ohm vape kits typically pair well with e-liquids are low nicotine with higher Vegetable Glycerine (VG) content, as these produce thicker vapour and a smoother hit. This smooth vaping experience is suitable for 'DL', or 'direct lung' vapes that the user inhales straight to the lungs from the device. Conversely, smaller, lower-powered devices like pod systems are better suited for e-liquids with higher Propylene Glycol (PG), to provide a throat hit at lower nicotine levels. These vapes are sometimes known as MTL vapes, or 'mouth to lung', as the user inhales to the mouth before then taking it into the lungs, like smoking a cigarette. Using the wrong type of e-liquid can lead to issues such as poor vapour production, a poor vaping experience, leaks, or even damage to the device with potential overheating. Therefore, it is essential to match your e-liquid type with the appropriate vape device to ensure both safety and an enjoyable vaping experience.

Why do nic salt liquids taste so strong?

Nicotine salt liquids taste stronger because they use a form of nicotine that is more stable and closer to the natural state found in tobacco leaves. This type of nicotine is combined with benzoic or citric acid, which lowers its pH level, resulting in a smoother throat hit even at higher nicotine concentrations. This smoothness allows manufacturers to infuse nic salt e-liquids with higher nicotine levels without causing the harshness associated with traditional freebase nicotine. Many vapers use nic salt liquids in powerful devices, so in the case of nic salt liquids that have a balance of 50/50 VG to PG, the reduced level of PG may also help the flavour stand out. One study looked at nic salt e-liquids and found they typically contain 3 to 4 times the amount of flavouring used in freebase nicotine liquids (4). Consequently, the flavors in nic salt liquids are often more pronounced.

This combination of strong, smooth nicotine delivery and intense flavour profiles makes nic salt e-liquids a popular choice among those seeking a more satisfying and flavourful vaping experience. It is worth noting, however, that the increased volume of flavourings produces more volatile compounds from the vaping process, and while Public Health England's evidence reviews indicate that E-Cigarettes are 95% less harmful than smoking cigarettes (5), vaping with nic salt e-liquids and at higher power levels may result in more harm than vaping with freebase nicotine liquids on a low powered device.
