In our shop in Tunbridge Wells we have plenty of people who have had their life changed by making the switch to SMOKO E-Cigarettes with the help of our Cigalike or the New SMOKO VAPE POD.
Today we tell the story of how SMOKO helped change someone’s life.
E-Cigarettes and Long-term smokers
“Vanessa was one of the first people that I served when I started with SMOKO, and so she holds a special place in my heart. She will come in every week or so and I get to hear a bit more about her life and have a joke or three!
Vanessa said she had started smoking at the age of 14 - we are taught never to ask a women their age but from shared snippets of information I can guess that she is in her early 60’s now.
She used to smoke 25-30 cigarettes a day, which over the years lead to all sorts of health-related problems. About 10 years ago after feeling short of breath and generally finding it hard to breathe, the GP sent her to the hospital for tests and it was then they found out Vanessa was suffering from COPD.
Added on top of this she suffered with a lack of blood flow from her arteries, which gave Vanessa problems and resulted in having to have surgery. After surgery came lots of pain and difficulty walking.
It wasn’t until a bout of pneumonia that led to her staying in intensive care though that she decided to make the switch to a SMOKO E-Cigarette starter kit.
Vanesa has been with SMOKO for 7 years now and uses a mix of E Cigarette and our Vape POD. She likes the look of the E cigarette while out and about in town as it is small and discreet, while preferring the hit of the Vape POD E-Cigarette while at home.
Although she is still having check ins with the hospital, she hasn’t had to have any further surgeries. Even better, when it comes to having lung function tests although the damage to the lungs cannot be reversed her condition hasn’t got any worse.
Vanessa often says that if she hadn’t chosen to make the switch to e-cigarettes she is pretty sure that she would have lost her leg by now, and wouldn’t be able to walk around without pain or feeling breathless. It's always nice to hear how well she is doing now, and the fact that SMOKO was able to change her life for the better.
She is very grateful that she made the choice after the health problems she occurred and simply put it down to a life-or-death choice.”
Vaping and COPD
For those who don’t know, COPD is an illness that is almost entirely caused by smoking. If you haven’t heard of it COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and is almost entirely found in smokers. COPD is the 2nd most common lung disease (behind asthma) with over 4.5% of adults having it.
It can manifest in different ways, from breathlessness to frequent chest infections and the more famous “smokers cough”. It also covers illnesses like bronchitis and emphysema.
Either way it can cause long term issues, and gets worse the more you smoke.
Unfortunately there isn’t a way to cure COPD but there is a way to stop it from getting worse. The 1st option is perhaps obvious, stop smoking completely. However that can be hard for most smokers (including Vanessa above), and so the second option of E-Cigarettes to help with COPD is perhaps more reliable.
As people who have COPD are almost certainly heavy smokers it can be hard to help them, as the 4000+ chemicals in cigarettes are making their condition worse, but the nicotine and the feel of a cigarette keeps them smoking.
That’s where E-Cigarettes come in. Vapes like SMOKO have the nicotine that the smoker is craving, but without the harmful chemicals. But more than that, vaping makes the smoker feel like they are having a cigarette as well.
That’s why in a study a few years ago it was found that smokers with COPD found E-Cigs more helpful than nicotine patches or gum!
Vaping and blood flow
Though cigarettes are well known for causing cancer, some of the other ways that tobacco hurts you aren’t as advertised. In Vanessa’s case she was experiencing one of the more common problems, and that is blood circulation issues.
Having an issue with your arteries might not seem as bad at first glance, it can cause a whole host of health problems, from heart disease to lack of oxygen to your body. And it’s more deadly then you would think too, with almost 48% of all smoking related deaths caused by heart disease!
The cause of this is, again, the 4000+ chemicals that are in cigarettes. Key chemicals like arsenic damage a smokers arteries, causing a build up in fatty material which narrows the arteries. This means less blood flow at a higher pressure (and so a higher risk of heart disease)
That’s not all though. Because of the carbon monoxide that a smoker breathes in every time they smoke less oxygen is taken in. Add that to less blood flow and cigarettes could be said to be slowly choking your body.
A lack of oxygen can cause other issues as well. The body relies on oxygen to work effectively as well as heal from damage. Effectively your body can’t heal as well from other injuries or diseases, for example COPD.
