The ‘Real Truth’ about Vaping

The ‘Real Truth’ about Vaping

Read the truth about vaping and whether false news articles are preventing people from reducing the largest preventable cause of death

Over the last decade, the popularity of e cigarettes with adult smokers in the UK has grown.  Over 3 million smokers now preferring to use an e-cigarette over traditional cigarettes, though there are still over 7.5 million smokers in the UK. But that number might start to fall as recent studies have shown that over 60% of them would like to quit. Many people think that vaping was invented by major tobacco companies, but the innovation came from one man who was looking for a better way to quit smoking – Chinese Pharmacist Hon Lik.

Out of the 4000+ chemicals that are found in cigarettes, over 50 of these could cause cancer.  In comparison, vaping products typically contain Nicotine, Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerine and flavourings.  These key ingredients have not been associated with any serious risk.  The components of cigarette smoke that are harmful to our health are either absent in e-cigarette vapour or are present at tiny percentages compared to cigarette smoke.

Dr Amir Khan (GP, Bradford) states that “Smoking costs the NHS millions and millions of pounds every year through illness and disability.  If vaping helps someone come off cigarettes and eventually stop vaping in the long run as well, I think vaping is a viable option for NHS smoking cessation services”.

Digging deeper into the statistics, it has been stipulated that the county of Yorkshire has the highest smoking rate in England with just over 4,000 smoking related cancers being diagnosed every year. Recently, the Yorkshire Cancer Research released a video regarding their findings on Vaping Vs Smoking.  It features evidence-based science from a variety of experts including Lung Health Specialists, researchers, Public Health experts, industry representatives, GP’s and stop smoking specialists from UK organisations such as Public Health England, the NHS, Royal College of Physicians and the British Medical Association.

The aim of this video is to address false news surrounding vaping and provide evidence-based facts to help smokers make an informed decision on being able to quit smoking.

One myth is that we don’t know anything about them.  Now, e cigarettes are possibly one of the most heavily researched innovations of our time”. Dr Sharon Cox (Senior Researcher- University College London)

A section of this film touches on the subject of the mistaken belief that e-cigarettes are more harmful than smoking increased rapidly among UK smokers following the US lung injury outbreak in late 2019. US authorities have now confirmed that vitamin E acetate, a thickening agent added to cannabis vaping products, was a primary cause of the US outbreak. This substance is banned from UK-regulated nicotine vaping products and we have some of the strictest regulations of vaping products in the world and have not seen any cases like what was seen in the US.

This video lets us see the stark reality of negative media coverage, when the general public give their opinions on e-cigs like scare stories such as “Vapes causing Lung Injury, vapes causing death”. Many people think that using e-cigarettes is as bad as or even worse than smoking. Many people are not aware of positive studies involving vaping, Including Public Health England’s (PHE) landmark 2015 report, which states “E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than tobacco”.

Martin Dockrell (The Tobacco Control lead at Public Health England) states in the video that “we have been following the evidence for some time and what is increasingly clear is that vaping is far less harmful than smoking”.
The Yorkshire Cancer Research video is definitely a very interesting watch and should be watched by all that are looking to stop smoking.

On the Gov.uk website, The Chief Medical Officer for England Professor Chris Whitty has said “The best thing a smoker can do for their health is stop smoking completely. Electronic cigarettes can help some people quit smoking and are a safer alternative.”

A statement from one of many who to date has left a comment with Yorkshire Cancer Research’s You Tube video:

If you have had time to watch this video, you will see that all quotes that are given by the UK medical profession are heavily backed by scientific research and really do promote the use of using electronic cigarettes to help quit smoking.

All media needs to stop promoting false allegations around e cigarettes and start looking at the truth behind facts given by Public Health England.  E smoking has been given a bad name and for what purpose?  This whole entity has been produced to help people stop smoking for good without having to cause more damage to individuals health.

Facts!
  • According to the NHS, after 72 hours of quitting smoking your breathing will feel easier and your energy will increase.
  • Vaping products are the most popular stop smoking aid in England. To date, they have supported 57,000 people to quit for good. They have gained in popularity because they feel similar to cigarettes and involve hand-to-mouth movement which allows people to continue this particular habit whilst working to break nicotine addiction.
  • Research suggests that vaping products are more effective at supporting people to stop smoking than other stop smoking aids such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), which includes nicotine patches and chewing gum. One trial of English stop smoking services found that smokers using vaping products were nearly twice as likely to stop smoking as those using NRT.
  • The Independent Vape Trade Association says that switching from a 20-cigarette-per-day smoking habit to vaping could save a person thousands of pounds each year.
