DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VAPING AND SMOKING

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VAPING AND SMOKING

Key Takeaways

  • Smoking burns tobacco, while vaping heats e-liquid, avoiding the tar and carbon monoxide produced by cigarette combustion.

  • Switching completely to vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking, reducing exposure to many toxic chemicals while helping adult smokers manage nicotine cravings.

  • Vaping can be more affordable and convenient than smoking, with SMOKO offering easy-to-use e-cigarettes featuring UK-made e-liquids to help adult smokers make the switch.

Stand outside a pub or office and you’ll often see someone reaching for a vape while another person lights a cigarette. The gestures may look familiar, but what actually separates vaping from smoking? From the way each works to the costs, daily habits and health considerations, there’s more to the comparison than first meets the eye.

At SMOKO E-Cigarettes and Vapes, we’ve been helping adult smokers explore alternatives to cigarettes since 2012, with all our e-liquids made here in the UK. By our estimates, our customers have avoided more than 850 million cigarettes and saved over £510 million along the way. In this guide, we explain the main differences between vaping and smoking in 2026, from how each works and what it costs to the experience you can expect.

How Cigarette Smoking and Electronic Cigarettes Work

The main difference between smoking and vaping is what happens when you take a puff: one burns tobacco, while the other heats e-liquid.

Smoking burns tobacco to produce smoke. During a puff, the burning tip of a cigarette can reach temperatures above 800°C. This process, known as combustion, releases a complex mixture of chemicals into the smoke you inhale. These include carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, benzene and heavy metals, alongside tar and thousands of other compounds, many associated with serious disease.

Vaping heats e-liquid rather than burning tobacco. A typical e-cigarette uses a battery-powered coil to heat the liquid, creating an aerosol commonly called vapour. This process produces no flame, ash or tar. E-liquid typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine and flavourings, with nicotine available in different strengths or left out altogether.

The distinction is straightforward: a cigarette produces smoke by burning tobacco, while a vape produces an aerosol by heating e-liquid. That difference explains why the two produce such different emissions.

Smoke vs Vapour: What Are You Actually Inhaling?

Burning tobacco and heating e-liquid produce very different emissions, which makes a substantial difference to what you inhale.

  • Cigarette smoke: Thousands of chemicals, including at least 70 known carcinogens(4), along with tar that collects in the lungs and carbon monoxide that reduces the amount of oxygen your blood can carry.

  • Vape vapour: Fewer harmful compounds, generally at much lower levels than in cigarette smoke. The UK government’s 2022 evidence review(2) concluded that vaping poses only a small fraction of the risks of smoking over the short and medium term.

For adult smokers who switch completely to vaping, leaving cigarette smoke behind may bring noticeable changes, with taste and smell improving within days and coughing and breathing improving over the weeks and months that follow.

Understanding the Health Effects of Vaping Compared With Smoking

Smoking and vaping have different health risks, and that distinction matters when you’re considering a switch, though both can lead to nicotine dependence(5). For adults who smoke, moving completely to vaping offers a significantly less harmful alternative(3) to cigarettes.

Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK, and it causes over 7 million deaths worldwide each year. It causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, stroke(6) and many other serious conditions. Most of this harm comes from the toxic chemicals and particles released when tobacco burns.

Vaping heats e-liquid without burning tobacco, producing no tar or carbon monoxide. Avoiding that combustion is the main reason vaping is less harmful than smoking. Nicotine remains highly addictive, with dependence risks comparable to heroin and cocaine, and researchers are still studying the effects of vaping over decades. Even with lower exposure than smoking, vaping can still have adverse effects. Vaping liquids and aerosols can also contain other chemicals and potentially harmful substances besides nicotine, and the long-term effects remain uncertain. Vaping may still affect lung health and could play a role in lung disease risk, even though exposure to toxicants is generally lower than with smoking. UK health guidance supports vaping as an alternative for adults who smoke, while advising that non-smokers and anyone under 18 should not take it up. These products are formally known as electronic nicotine delivery systems and were introduced as a socially acceptable alternative to smoking, but they are not risk free.

For adult smokers, switching completely to vaping means leaving behind the cigarette smoke responsible for most smoking-related harm. Stopping cigarettes altogether matters, because even a few a day still carry significant health risks.

Nicotine Delivery: How Much Nicotine You Need and How Vaping Feels

Nicotine is found in cigarettes and many e-liquids, and it plays a major part in satisfying cravings. What changes is how you take it in. Cigarettes deliver nicotine through tobacco smoke, while vapes deliver it through an aerosol, with a choice of nicotine strengths to suit your needs. In some e-cigarettes, nicotine levels can reach 100 mg/ml, so it is worth checking how much nicotine you are using. Vaping can still lead to nicotine addiction, and lowering your nicotine strength gradually may help reduce withdrawal symptoms as you cut back. Like regular cigarettes, vapes can also deliver highly addictive nicotine.

The everyday routine changes too:

  • Smell: Cigarette smoke leaves a lingering odour on clothes, hair, car interiors and fingers. Vaping avoids that burnt-tobacco smell, although the vapour can carry a scent that varies with the flavour.

  • Ash and mess: Smoking leaves ash and cigarette butts, and a lit cigarette can scorch surfaces. Vapes have no burning tip and produce neither ash nor cigarette butts.

  • Pace: Once lit, a cigarette keeps burning between puffs until it burns down or you put it out. With a vape, you can take a few puffs and put it away without needing to finish a whole cigarette.

  • Flavour: Cigarettes offer a relatively narrow range of tobacco tastes. Vapes give adult smokers more choice, from familiar tobacco and menthol to fruit and dessert flavours.

For some adult smokers, keeping the familiar hand-to-mouth action and satisfying nicotine cravings without cigarette smoke can help the move to vaping feel like a manageable change to their daily routine.

Vaping vs Smoking Costs: What Could You Save With SMOKO?

The cost is often one of the first differences smokers notice when they switch to vaping. A pack-a-day smoker in the UK can spend thousands of pounds a year on cigarettes, with rising prices adding to the bill. Switching completely to vaping can bring that spending down substantially.

Those savings become more noticeable as the weeks turn into months and years. At SMOKO, we estimate that our customers have collectively saved over £510 million since 2012 by moving away from cigarettes. If you smoke a pack a day, comparing your yearly cigarette bill with the cost of a SMOKO starter kit, pre-filled refills and any replacement batteries can show just how much you could save.

E Cigarette Sales, Public Use and Everyday Practicalities

The differences between smoking and electronic cigarette use also show up in everyday practicalities, from where you can use them to what you need to carry, whether that means e-cigarettes, vape pens or another vaping device format.

  • Where you can use them: Smoking is banned in enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces across the UK, and those restrictions reflect wider negative social attitudes driven by its health risks, including the established dangers of secondhand smoke and passive smoking, with limited exemptions. Vaping policies vary between venues and employers, so check the rules before using your device.

  • Age restrictions: Cigarettes and nicotine vapes cannot legally be sold to under-18s in the UK, with all vaping products covered nationwide. Vaping is intended for adult smokers making the switch and former smokers staying off cigarettes, and there is also concern about uptake among young people and young adults because nicotine use can encourage later use of traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products.

  • Fire risk: Lit cigarettes and smouldering ash can start serious house fires. Vapes have neither during normal use, although batteries should be charged, handled and recycled according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Travel and work: Where vaping is permitted, a device offers the convenience of taking a few puffs and putting it away, without needing a lighter or an ashtray. But those practical differences do not make it harmless compared with smoking cigarettes.

Can Vaping Help People Quit Smoking?

If you have never smoked, the advice is straightforward: do not start vaping. For adult smokers, vaping offers a practical way(1) to move away from cigarettes while keeping some of the familiar routine. It can also be one smoking cessation option for people trying to stop smoking, alongside nicotine replacement therapy and other nicotine replacement products. E-cigarettes can still contain high nicotine levels, with some products reaching up to 100 mg/ml.

If you smoke, a more useful question is: “What could help cigarette smokers leave cigarettes behind, reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals and spend less?” Around half of all smokers try to quit each year, but only about 6% manage to stop smoking completely. Vaping offers three reasons to consider making the switch:

  1. Harm reduction: Switching completely removes tobacco combustion, avoiding tar and substantially reducing exposure to many toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke.

  2. Cost: Replacing cigarettes with vaping can cut your annual spending considerably, depending on the products you choose and how much you use them.

  3. Control: Choose a nicotine strength that helps manage your cravings, with the option to reduce it gradually when you feel ready, since both vaping and cigarettes can reinforce nicotine addiction.

Vaping has been found to be roughly twice as effective as nicotine patches. Using e-cigarettes with support can be more effective than nicotine replacement products. Research also suggests daily e cigarette use increases the likelihood of quitting eightfold. In one reported outcome, 28% of daily users quit smoking tobacco altogether. Some adult smokers use vaping to quit smoking cigarettes, but should aim to quit vaping too because the long-term effects are still uncertain.

At SMOKO E-Cigarettes and Vapes, all our e-liquids are made in the UK, and we design our range around what adult smokers need: straightforward devices, dependable performance and a choice of flavours to help make the move from cigarettes feel more familiar. In the UK, 54.1% of e-cigarette users are ex-smokers. People who quit vaping may experience withdrawal symptoms and can benefit from support from family, friends or nicotine replacement products.

Conclusion

The clearest difference between vaping and smoking is how they work: unlike traditional cigarettes, cigarettes burn tobacco, while vapes heat e-liquid, so switching may be less harmful for adult smokers but is not risk free, including in relation to e cigarette or vaping use associated lung injury. Switching completely to vaping leaves behind tobacco smoke and tar while keeping the familiar hand-to-mouth routine, and public-health agencies such as the disease control have linked that lung-injury outbreak especially to some THC or modified products. For adult smokers, that change can mean substantially lower exposure to harmful chemicals, less lingering odour and a smaller annual bill. Choosing a device, flavour and nicotine strength that suit you can help make the move away from cigarettes easier to stick with. If you’re ready to make that change, explore SMOKO’s straightforward e-cigarettes and vapes, all featuring UK-made e-liquids, and find an option that fits your day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between vaping and smoking?
Smoking burns tobacco, producing smoke containing tar, carbon monoxide and thousands of chemicals. Vaping heats e-liquid to create an aerosol without burning tobacco, significantly reducing exposure to many harmful substances.

Is vaping less harmful than smoking cigarettes?
Yes. According to UK public health guidance, vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking because it avoids tobacco combustion. However, vaping is not completely risk-free, and the greatest benefit comes from switching away from cigarettes completely.

Can vaping help you quit smoking?
Yes. Nicotine vapes and e-cigarettes can help adult smokers manage cravings while maintaining the familiar hand-to-mouth routine. Choosing a suitable nicotine strength and switching completely from cigarettes can make the transition more manageable.

Is vaping cheaper than smoking in the UK?
Vaping can cost considerably less than smoking, particularly for pack-a-day smokers. SMOKO estimates that its customers have collectively saved over £510 million since 2012 by switching away from traditional cigarettes.

Does vaping contain the same nicotine as cigarettes?
Both cigarettes and nicotine-containing e-liquids deliver nicotine, but they do so differently. Cigarettes deliver nicotine through tobacco smoke, while vapes use an aerosol, allowing adult smokers to choose from different nicotine strengths to help manage cravings.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHY YOU SHOULD QUIT SMOKING CIGARETTES AND SWITCH TO VAPING

If you are an adult smoker who has struggled to quit cigarettes or you are a vaper using a Chinese-made vape, here are some important facts about using SMOKO E-Cigarettes and Vapes.

It is common knowledge that tobacco cigarettes are really bad for us. There are over 4,000 harmful chemicals in cigarettes and 50 known carcinogens!

Some of the chemicals include Tar, Carbon Monoxide, Arsenic, Formaldehyde, Acetone, Ammonia, Acetic Acid, Hydrogen Cyanide, Lead, DDT and Butane to name a few. No one in their right mind would put any of these chemicals into bodies!

Due to these chemicals, each time you light up a cigarette, you take 11 minutes off the end of your life! And when you smoke, everything has a stale smoke smell!

The reason why medical professionals around the world suggest switching to electronic cigarettes and vapes is the lack of those chemicals found in cigarettes.

In fact, e-cigarettes only have 4 main ingredients. Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin, Flavourings and nicotine. Nicotine is the only physical reason why you smoke and there are many health advantages of nicotine.

So if you compare the amount of ingredients in a cigalike vs. tobacco cigarettes, there is a 99% difference.

Many adult smokers looking to quit and switch to a cigalike or vape starter kit will have a lot of choice. There are many types of e-cigarettes on the market and they do essentially the same thing. But how do you find the right vape for you?

A SMOKO Vape starter kit uses magnetic techology to hold the vape refills in place. With the SMOKO Cigalike starter kit, you simply screw the e-cig refills into the battery.

All of our vape and e-cig refills use our Made in the UK e-liquids - with the highest quality flavours and ingredients. Most disposable vape brands are made in China....
