SYMPTOMS OF VAPING TOO MUCH - NICOTINE OVERDOSE

Table of Contents

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Recognising Nicotine Overdose is Crucial

Excessive vaping can lead to nicotine poisoning, with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and rapid heart rate. Early detection is vital to avoid serious health risks.

  • It's Easy to Consume Too Much Nicotine with Vapes

Unlike cigarettes, vapes allow for continuous use, making it easier to unknowingly exceed safe nicotine levels — especially with high-strength disposables or salt nicotine e-liquids.

  • Safer Alternatives and Moderation Can Help

Switching to lower nicotine strengths, regulated refillable devices, or vape brands like SMOKO with controlled nicotine delivery can help reduce the risk of overdose while supporting smoking cessation.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VAPING TOO MUCH - NICOTINE OVERDOSE?

Vaping can cause a nicotine overdose, but in the UK the maximum available strength for retail e-liquids is a 2.0% strength. This is 20mg nicotine per ml of liquid, indicating that you would need to use over 50 SMOKO E-Cigarette refills to get close to consuming 50mg of nicotine (approaching the deadly dose) but you will likely experience nicotine poisoning symptoms way before this which will prevent you consuming more. Additionally, nicotine poisoning can also result from the accidental ingestion of nicotine containing plants, which highlights the importance of being cautious with all nicotine products!

WHAT IS NICOTINE IN VAPING?

It is fact that smoking increases the risk of getting more than fifty different serious health conditions and when we talk about cigarettes, nicotine is the chemical that is more than likely always mentioned. Nicotine is also found in various nicotine containing plants, which can pose risks if accidentally ingested.

Nicotine has always been closely linked with smoking as it is the highly addictive chemical that is found in cigarettes. However, it is not the nicotine that can kill you but rather the 4,000 other chemicals and 50 known carcinogens that are found in each cigarette that you smoke.

The chemical nicotine speeds up the central nervous system to increase neural activity in the brain, otherwise known as a stimulant. Nicotine is a simulant just like caffeine that is found in your cup of tea or coffee. This chemical receives bad press due to its connection with cigarettes and yes there are an abundance of myths that are are still circulating (1). Yes, nicotine can raise blood pressure and raise your heart rate, but the substance itself has been proven NOT to kill you.

Presently, research is under way in the US to help prove that nicotine may be good for slowing the aging process of the brain and retaining memory.

Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said:

“It is also now widely recognized that, though it is the nicotine that causes dependence, tobacco products (which can be characterized as particularly ‘dirty’ drug delivery devices) are responsible for the vast majority of the damage to health.”

It’s highly unlikely that you will ever overdose on nicotine. It is nearly impossible to do so as we will explain in greater depth in this article.

WHAT IS NICOTINE POISONING?

Nicotine poisoning, also known as nicotine toxicity, occurs when someone ingests, inhales, or comes into contact with too much nicotine. This highly addictive substance is found in various tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). While serious or fatal overdoses are rare, the risk has increased with the popularity of e-cigarettes and pure liquid nicotine products. Symptoms of nicotine poisoning can range from mild to severe and may include nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, and, in extreme cases, seizures or respiratory failure. It’s crucial to be aware of these risks, especially with the rise of nicotine-containing products.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK OF NICOTINE POISONING?

Children are particularly vulnerable to nicotine poisoning due to their smaller size and developing bodies. They can easily ingest or come into contact with nicotine-containing products like e-liquids, cigarettes, or chewing tobacco. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), children under the age of six are the most common victims of nicotine poisoning. Additionally, individuals who use multiple transdermal nicotine patches or ingest liquid nicotine are also at significant risk. It’s essential to keep these products out of reach of children and to use them responsibly to prevent accidental poisoning.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF NICOTINE POISONING?

The symptoms of nicotine poisoning depend on the amount you inhale and there are a number of side effects of vaping (2) that you can look for when you think you have overdosed on nicotine poisoning. Nicotine poisoning can also occur from the accidental ingestion of nicotine containing plants, which underscores the need for caution with all nicotine sources.

These symptoms can start to occur within the first fifteen minutes to an hour of being exposed to high amounts of the chemical.

symptoms of nicotine poisoning

Nausea and vomiting

Stomach pain and loss of appetite

Digestive System problems

Increased heart rate and blood pressure

Headache

Mouth-watering

Shortness of Breath

Dry Cough

Dizziness or tremors

Confusion and anxiety et al

Within thirty minutes to four hours later, symptoms can shift and also include:

Shortness of Breath

Slower heartbeat and blood pressure

Dry Mouth

Extreme fatigue

Weakness, slow reflexes, or unable to control muscles

Pale skin

In some very extreme cases when you have inhaled high nicotine levels, some of the side effects and symptoms can include:

Seizures

Coma (3)

Breathing difficulties

Respiratory failure, bronchiolitis obliterans

Here are SMOKO, we would advise that if you experience any of these symptoms, please seek medical advice (call 999 UK)

WHAT CAUSES NIC SICK?

In layman’s terms, nic sick (nicotine sickness) refers to non-specific symptoms of overdosing with nicotine. Poisoning of this kind only occurs when nicotine begins to show more side effects.

Nicotine sickness can also result from the accidental ingestion of nicotine containing plants, which are another source of this toxic substance.

The CDC (Centre for Disease Control) state that 50 to 60 milligrams of nicotine is a deadly dose for an adult who weighs around 150 pounds (10 stone, 7 pounds). But the easiest way to calculate this is to work out how much nicotine you’d actually have to vaporise in the space of 30 minutes.

If you decide to select another brand of electronic cigarettes other than SMOKO, then please check the measurements that they place on their refills:

1 SMOKO e cigarette refill = 1ml of nicotine

1 SMOKO vape refill = 2ml of nicotine

This would mean that you would need to inhale 50 e-cigarette refills or 25 Vape refills in the space of 30 minutes to get anywhere close to dangerous levels of nicotine or feel any side effects and experience the symptoms of vaping too much. Realistically, you won’t experience long term health problems, serious injuries or life threatening issues as your body will let you know way before you get to that stage.

Everyone’s body has a way of telling you that it has had enough nicotine (making you feel light headed and nauseous). So after having symptoms like these, the likelihood of you wanting to inhale more of your e-cigarette is very much slim to none.

Nicotine poisoning is most commonly known with regards to the younger cigarette smoker, who are inexperienced with the use of tobacco.

THE DANGERS OF LIQUID NICOTINE

Liquid nicotine, commonly found in e-cigarettes and other nicotine products, is a highly concentrated form of nicotine that can be extremely hazardous if ingested or spilled on the skin. Just one teaspoon of liquid nicotine can be fatal to a 26-pound child. The sweet flavours and attractive packaging of these products can make them appealing to children, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion. To prevent such dangers, it’s crucial to store liquid nicotine products securely and use child-resistant packaging. Always handle these products with care to avoid accidental exposure.

WHAT TYPES OF POISONS AND CHEMICALS ARE IN CIGARETTES?

Smoking tobacco consists of over 5,000 other chemicals (other than nicotine) and 50 known carcinogens.  At least 70 of these chemicals are carcinogenic (cause cancers like lung cancer) and many are toxic (4).

Other than in cigarettes, many of these chemicals are also found in consumer products around the house/garage and they come with highlighted warning labels.

While you are warned about the danger of the poisons in these products, there is no such warning for the chemicals in cigarette smoking.

there are over 4000 chemicals and 50 known carcinogens in cigarettes

Here are a few of the chemicals which are found in tobacco smoke:
Acetone—found in nail polish remover
Acetic acid—an ingredient in hair dye
Ammonia—a common household cleaner
Arsenic—used in rat poison
Benzene—found in rubber cement and petrol
Butane—used in lighter fluid
Cadmium—active component in battery acid
Carbon monoxide—released in car exhaust fumes
Formaldehyde—embalming fluid
Hexamine—found in barbecue lighter fluid
Lead—used in batteries
Naphthalene—an ingredient in mothballs
Methanol—a main component in rocket fuel
Tar—material used for paving roads
Toluene—used to manufacture paint

It is important to note that e-cigarettes DO NOT CONTAIN any of these or the other 4,000 chemicals that are found in traditional cigarettes.

CAN YOU GET NICOTINE POISONING BY VAPING TOO MUCH?

As discussed before, being able to get nicotine poisoning is nearly impossible, especially if you use an e-cigarette like SMOKO's.  Our electronic cigarette are prefilled with the e-liquid to make it easier and safer for you the customer.

If you do manage to get nicotine poisoning through ingesting large quantities of e-liquids , you will more than likely be given Activated Charcoal at A&E to help absorb the chemicals and this is commonly taken by mouth (5) to treat poisonings.

This drug should be given within the first hour after inhaling all the nicotine as it does not seem to be beneficial if taken after two hours.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU’RE VAPING?

Smoking and vaping both involve heating a substance and inhaling the resulting fumes. With traditional cigarettes, you inhale smoke from burning tobacco. With vaping, your device heats up an e-liquid (also called vape juice) until it turns into a vapour that you inhale.

“Vaping is a delivery system similar to a nebulizer, which people with asthma or other lung conditions may be familiar with,” says Broderick. “A nebulizer turns liquid medicine into a mist that patients breathe in. It’s a highly effective way of delivering medicine to the lungs”, according to Hopkins Medicine (6).

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF INGESTING NICOTINE AND VAPING TOO MUCH?

In an E-Cigarette, the e-liquid (or vape juice) contains the flavour, and this is what is vaporised in your device.  When you smoke an e-cigarette you inhale vapor which consists of 4 ingredients:

Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine (ingredients found in chewing gum, candy, ice cream, cake mixes and soft drinks), Food flavouring (found in most of our food we now eat) and nicotine – if included (due to its addictive nature, is the only reason that we smoke).

The only chemical that is in both cigarettes and e-cigarettes is nicotine, and this doesn't cause harm unless ingested in high enough quantities. In addition to e-liquids, nicotine can also be ingested from nicotine containing plants, which can be equally hazardous.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF VAPING TOO MUCH?

If you find yourself vaping more than you feel you should, you may notice a few side effects of vaping too much nicotine.

1) Dry throat - Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine both attract water, this has a knock-effect of drying out your throat, which can lead to irritation and coughing.

2) Vaper's tongue - This is when your tongue becomes desensitised to the flavour of your e-liquid. This leads to a loss of taste and can impact your enjoyment when you vape.

3) Early effects of nicotine poisoning - Inhaling too much nicotine may lead you to begin feeling some of the early symptoms of nicotine poisoning, like increased heart rate and nausea.

So, exactly how much vape is too much? This will depends on your sensitivity to PG and VG, the nicotine strength you are using, and how well you stay hydrated! We recommend having 6-7 slow puffs on SMOKO devices using our 2.0% nicotine strength (20mg/ml) before putting your vape down and letting your cravings dictate when you reach for another puff! This should help you  avoid any side effects from vaping too much!

nicotine gum and e-cigarettes are a great way to quit smoking

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF GETTING NICOTINE ON YOUR SKIN?

If you order a SMOKO product then there is no risk of being able to get nicotine on the skin as all of our E-Cigarettes are prefilled and ready to use – no messing about.  Unlike other larger e-cigarettes, vape mods or nicotine products that are prone to leaking and are messy to refill, the chance of getting nicotine on your skin using a SMOKO product is very slim as the cartridges are not easily broken.  This is why we prefer to sell pre filled refills as we feel they are much safer for the consumer.

If you are vaping juices that contain liquid nicotine, please be aware that if the cartridge is broken, then nicotine can pass through the skin.

ARE ALL ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES THE SAME?

Many people would have read about some of the issues that have been found using some dodgy vape pens and vape juice like popcorn lung, lung injury due to vaping vitamin e acetate (found in illegal THC based e-liquids).  The addition of Vitamin E in some of these illegal e-liquids was an issue in the US a few years ago because many people were trying to add lethal dose of THC et al to their vape pens  However, the American Lung Association found the addition of vitamin e acetate was the cause of EVALI (e-cigarette and vape associated lung injury).

At SMOKO, none of our products contain vitamin e acetate or dialectal (the cause of popcorn lung).

TREATMENT FOR NICOTINE POISONING

If you suspect someone has ingested or come into contact with too much nicotine, immediate medical attention is crucial. A medical service or 999 if the person is experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Treatment for nicotine poisoning typically involves supportive care, such as monitoring vital signs, administering activated charcoal to absorb the nicotine, and providing oxygen therapy. In severe cases, hospitalisation may be necessary to ensure the individual’s safety and recovery.

PREVENTION OF NICOTINE POISONING

Preventing nicotine poisoning requires careful handling and responsible use of nicotine-containing products. Here are some tips to help prevent nicotine poisoning:

  • Store nicotine-containing products, including e-liquids and cigarettes, out of reach of children and pets.

  • Use child-resistant packaging for liquid nicotine products.

  • Avoid using multiple transdermal nicotine patches or ingesting liquid nicotine.

  • Educate children and adults about the dangers of nicotine poisoning and the importance of responsible use of nicotine-containing products.

  • Consider nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products, such as gum or lozenges, which are safer alternatives to e-cigarettes and other nicotine products.

By following these tips and being aware of the risks associated with nicotine poisoning, you can help prevent this potentially deadly condition.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SUSPECT YOU ARE VAPING TOO MUCH?

As we discussed earlier, experience nicotine poisoning from vaping an e-cigarette is nearly impossible, but if you do suspect that you have inhaled too much nicotine or other effects of vaping within a one hour period, then you should stop vaping, drink just water and if you are still feeling nauseous, should seek medical advice.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHY YOU SHOULD QUIT SMOKING CIGARETTES AND SWITCH TO VAPING

If you are an adult smoker who has struggled to quit cigarettes or you are a vaper using a Chinese-made vape, here are some important facts about using SMOKO E-Cigarettes and Vapes.

It is common knowledge that tobacco cigarettes are really bad for us. There are over 4,000 harmful chemicals in cigarettes and 50 known carcinogens!

Some of the chemicals include Tar, Carbon Monoxide, Arsenic, Formaldehyde, Acetone, Ammonia, Acetic Acid, Hydrogen Cyanide, Lead, DDT and Butane to name a few. No one in their right mind would put any of these chemicals into bodies!

Due to these chemicals, each time you light up a cigarette, you take 11 minutes off the end of your life! And when you smoke, everything has a stale smoke smell!

The reason why medical professionals around the world suggest switching to electronic cigarettes and vapes is the lack of those chemicals found in cigarettes.

In fact, e-cigarettes only have 4 main ingredients. Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin, Flavourings and nicotine. Nicotine is the only physical reason why you smoke and there are many health advantages of nicotine.

So if you compare the amount of ingredients in a cigalike vs. tobacco cigarettes, there is a 99% difference.

Many adult smokers looking to quit and switch to a cigalike or vape starter kit will have a lot of choice. There are many types of e-cigarettes on the market and they do essentially the same thing. But how do you find the right vape for you?

A SMOKO Vape starter kit uses magnetic techology to hold the vape refills in place. With the SMOKO Cigalike starter kit, you simply screw the e-cig refills into the battery.

All of our vape and e-cig refills use our Made in the UK e-liquids - with the highest quality flavours and ingredients. Most disposable vape brands are made in China....
