- SMOKO E-Cigarettes
One argument keeps popping up lately with e-cigs, and that is whether it is a good idea that e-cigarettes have flavours.
E-cigarettes have gained a lot of negative attention over their brief time in existence, but one by one the arguments against them have started to fall. They have been proven to be much better for you than cigarettes. All studies have proven that there are few if any side effects of the vapour itself or second hand vapour. Now new studies are showing how they are becoming a better way of quitting than patches and other approved methods.
This week we are looking at why people don't like flavours in e-cigarettes, and why flavours can really help.
Adults don't like Flavours
There is an idea floating around that flavours are just for children, that adults could never like anything other than tobacco. Recently an American senator,Jay Rockefeller, has been quoted saying "I’m an adult, so would I be attracted to Cherry Crush, Chocolate Treat, Peachy Keen, Vanilla Dreams? No, I wouldn’t."
This has always been an odd argument, after all why would adults not like the taste of coffee, absinthe, peaches or vanilla? Is he saying that he doesn't like chocolate?
This idea that e-cigs have to taste like a cigarette to be for adults simply makes no sense, but for some reason is catching on with influential law makers. The whole point of e-cigarettes is that they are not cigarettes, so why should they all taste the same?
When people start we always suggest going for a tobacco flavour like Original or Virginia Rolling, as they are the most like a cigarette. It helps new starters to make the switch and makes the e-cigarette feel more like what they are used to.
However once a customer has gotten used to the e-cig, we encourage them to try all our flavours, after all why stick with tobacco flavour when you don't have to?
Flavours Don't Help Smokers Quit
It is implied when people like Mr Rockefeller start demonising flavours that there is no other point to them then to attract children. The issue with this however is that there is a point to them, they help people stay away from cigarettes.
Dr. Konstantino Farsalinos headed up a study to determine whether flavoured e-liquids had any impact on the success rate of smokers seeking to quit. He concluded that e-liquid flavouring “are important contributors in reducing or eliminating smoking consumption.”
Yet another study has shown that e-cig with flavours help people, because it creates another mental barrier between e-cigarettes and the cigarettes they used to smoke. When your mind starts to associate the taste of Cola for example with nicotine then the old impulse to have a cigarette is diminished.
Flavours Are Attracting Children
This argument can be read two ways; 1. children are attracted to e-cigarettes because of the flavours, which has been proven to be false several times, 2. e-cigarette companies are trying to attract children.
The first point isn't true, but at least it is a fair worry. Lately however some people have been suggesting the second option to explain flavours in e-cigarettes.
This is disgusting to us at SMOKO, e-cigarettes are designed and marketed at smokers and when accusations like this are thrown around it only hurts smokers who want to make the switch to a healthier alternative. We have a strict no under 18 policy (you might have noticed the pop up when you came to the website), and we also will not sell to any non-smokers.
Flavours are not there to entice children into smoking, they are there to give another tool to smokers to help them stay away from cigarettes.
They also taste amazing, and why would you not rather use something delicious then one that tastes like a cigarette? To persecute companies that have flavours is only damaging the chances that smokers will quit for good.
Here at SMOKO we are proud of our flavours, so check out them out and see if you can kick the habit for good with one of our new starter kit.
