Here at SMOKO we support anything that helps people quit cigarettes, as they are easily the biggest preventable cause of death in Europe if not the world. A worthy goal then, but will plain packaging actually work? In today's blog then we are looking at what effect the switching of brands could have on smokers and non-smokers.
For those who don't know, recently the British government has been looking into making all cigarette packages plain, leaving only the brand name on the pack of cigarettes. Instead of branding there would be health warnings and images. This is designed to deter people from smoking and to encourage those who are smoking to quit.
By most accounts this proposed legislation is not designed primarily to target long term smokers, but rather the infrequent and the new starters, the ones who have not become desensitized to the warnings. That was always the issue with the warnings on the front of cigarette packets, that after a little while they simply stopped working. This then will not affect the 20+ a day smoker, but might stop a would be smoker from buying their first pack of cigarettes.
This legislation is not new though, in fact it has already been put through in Australia last year and has had mostly good results, in that in a survey has shown that people feel less inclined to buy the plain packets. It also made people think that the cigarettes had changed, that the taste had changed, and not for the better.
But perhaps the best news is that when a study on how the plain boxes effects young smokers it showed that they took the warnings much more seriously. This of course could be because they haven't been exposed to as much of this information, but it does at least show that these plain boxes will draw the eye to the warnings more than before. The study also showed that the graphic images also had more effect on the younger smokers, with most of them retaining the information. Just taking the branding away makes a surprisingly big difference to smokers who are just starting.
How will this affect the long term smokers though? Sadly not that much, In one very small study it was found that after people got used to the plain boxes, smokers found it easy to tell the difference, and apart from the taste difference many smokers have kept going like normal.
This legislation then is a good step forward, it has the ability to warn young smokers or scare them away completely from smoking. For the rest of the smokers there are still alternatives, such as us to give up the cigarettes.
