Electronic Cigarette Report Provokes Anger From UK Experts
There have been arguments about the electronic cigarette in academic circles even since they came onto the market. But with the majority of doctors and scientists in the UK backing the use of e-cigarettes it seemed that the argument was settled on the safety of e-cigarettes.
That made the announcement by the US surgeon general last week that e-cigarettes should be treated the same as tobacco so out of place.
Surprisingly it wasn't the electronic cigarette advocates who voiced concern though, it was UK scientists and doctors. One scientist claimed it is a "fundamental misunderstanding of the evidence". Others emphasized that the electronic cigarette was still 95% less harmful then cigarettes.
So why did he say this and why do UK and US scientists have such different opinions?
What Sparked This Reaction?
Vivek Murthy, America’s surgeon-general, said in his report that nicotine is dangerous, especially to teenagers . He say that "their brains are still developing and can cause reduced impulse control, deficits in attention and cognition, and mood disorders". Although this sounds like an average teenager, it is apparently a great cause of concern to him.
Dr. Murthy wants electronic cigarettes to be classified the same as tobacco to try and stop young people from becoming addicted. He is worried that e-cigarettes could act as a gateway drug, and get the young addicted to cigarettes.
Now this doesn't sound so bad, if we can stop teenagers from becoming addicted then that's great. The only issue is that e-cigarettes have been proven NOT to do exactly that.
In a study by ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) it showed that e-cigarette use for teenagers was "rare and largely among those who currently or have previously smoked" . In the same study they state that "it is unlikely that electronic cigarettes are currently acting as a gateway to smoking".
ASH even replied to the Surgeon-General by saying they were "puzzled by the level of concern being expressed about e-cigarettes".
And this is backed up by Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). Both institutions actually suggest e-cigarettes as a good alternative to cigarettes.
PHE famously said that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than cigarettes, a point they still stand by. Meanwhile the RCP said that doctors should recommend e-cigarettes to those who want to quit.
Why The Vast Difference Of Opinion?
A recent article in the Times raised a good point about this issue, pointing out that in the UK e-cigarettes are compared to cigarettes, while in the US e-cigarettes are compared to quitting altogether. This has created a divide between UK scientists and their US counterparts.
UK scientists see the electronic cigarette as the much healthier option, something to get people off cigarettes. Meanwhile the Americans just see it as something to become addicted to.
This just seems odd, as it does seems to imply that e-cigarette users are doing it for fun, not to quit cigarettes. It explains the Surgeon General's comments though, as of course not doing anything is going to be much better for you than e-cigarettes.
Here at SMOKO we are firmly in the UK camp, e-cigarettes were designed for smokers and meant to be used only by smokers. That is why we talk about making the switch and design all our products to help smokers move to a much healthier alternative.
With that in mind it is crazy to lump them in with cigarettes. It actively hurts those you are trying to help by deterring them from giving e-cigarettes a try.
So if you are a smoker and want to make the switch to a product that is 95% less harmful than cigarettes try our starter kit, and see if it can help!
