E-cigarettes use (also known as vaping) has grown rapidly over the past few years. Estimates say there are currently over 3 million adults using them in the UK. And that number is rising every day. But the use of e-cigs is not confined to the UK alone. It is a phenomenon that has taken the world by storm.
A 2014 report by CDC showed that 3.7% of American adults use e-cigs on a regular basis. That figure, according to the U.S Census Bureau represents more than 9 million adult consumers.
So what exactly is vaping, and how does it differ from the conventional cigarette smoking?
Smoking entails burning tobacco and inhaling the smoke that is produced. With "vaping" you warm a flavoured liquid (known as e-liquid) in a battery-powered device which produces a vapour that you inhale.
Vaping mimics the experience of smoking but lacks the lingering smell and the threat of 2nd hand smoke (as they don’t produce smoke).
However, the majority e-cigarettes contain nicotine so users are able to get the same hit they want, without the dangers of smoke.
The Rapid Rise Of E-Cigs
The rise of e-cigs have boomed in the past few years fuelled largely by the want of former and current smokers to find a healthier and more affordable alternative.
Though they have only recently become popular, the idea of e-cigarettes has actually been around since the 1960’s! In 1963 an American called Herbert Gilbert patented "a smokeless non-tobacco cigarette". It heated a liquid to produce “moist, flavoured air”, but without nicotine.
Sadly it didn’t catch on, as the world still loved their cigarettes and the nicotine hit they got from smoking, and the dangers of smoking had not become widely publicised. It wasn’t until 2003 that the modern e-cigarette was invented, with the all-important nicotine this time.
A Chinese pharmacist and inventor called Hon Lik is credited with creating the modern day e-cigarette after trying to find a new way to quit smoking.
It wasn’t until 2007 though that the e-cigarette made their way to Europe and the US and their popularity exploded. And it’s not hard to see why. Here was a new product that smokers could satisfy their cravings for nicotine while reducing the damage to themselves.
The rise of e-cigs has caused many companies to thrive. Ten years ago, it would've seemed impossible there would come a time when vaping would be a lifestyle choice. If you had told someone in 2006 that they would be charging their cigarette, they would have thought you were mad! Yet today the global e-cigs related sales grew from £360 million in 2009 to a whopping £6.1 billion in 2015.
The Positive Impact On Health
Ever since e-cigarettes have come out there has been debate over whether they really are the better option.
So is vaping safer than smoking?
Based on a recent study that analysed the quantity of cancer-causing chemicals in the body of smokers, the answer is Yes.
A similar report by the Public Health England (PHE) claims that e-cigs are “at least 95% less harmful than cigarettes”. In yet another study backed by Cancer Research, UK it was found that participants who swapped cigarettes for e-cigs for 6 months had lower levels of cancer-causing compounds in their bodies.
This means that e-cigarettes are to a great extent are safer than regular cigarettes. And they are not just healthier the cigarettes, they have been shown to stop people smoking. The report concluded that e-cigarettes may have contributed to the falling rates in smoking habits among adults.
Since 2007 vaping has grown to the point that even cigarette CEO’s are saying that they will be the death of smoking. All of the major tobacco companies have invested heavily in e-cigarette brands or creating their own next generation nicotine devices.
This is a sign that the era of conventional smoking is ending. More people are embracing the new and safer way to satisfy their craving for nicotine in a healthier and more cost effective way.
