Largest Study Yet Proves E-Cigarettes Help People Quit

Largest Study Yet Proves E-Cigarettes Help People Quit

The biggest study conducted so far on e-cigarettes has was shown that e-cigarettes are linked to more people quitting cigarettes.

While this isn't surprising, many studies have said this for years, what is surprising is that it came from an American University.

Unlike Europe and the UK who are in favour of e-cigarettes, the USA has a much more love/hate relationship with them. America has a history of being anti-E-Cigs, even in the face of evidence such as Public Health England's study that showed the E-Cigs were 95% less harmful then cigarettes!

The Study

This landmark study was conducted by a team of researchers at the University of California. They drew from the general population surveys in the USA dating from 2001 to 2015.

The researchers identified the smokers who had tried e-cigarettes between 2014 and 2015 and followed up with them to see if they had quit. They then compared that to quitting rates from previous surveys to look at the difference in quitting rates.

The results showed that people who used electronic cigarettes were 25% more likely to make an attempt to quit smoking compared to normal cigarette users. And even better then that, they were much more likely to quit for good.

The overall quit rate was up as well, from 4.5% in 2011 to 5.6% in 2015.

1.1% seems to be a small change, but to put that in perspective that is over 350,000 extra smokers who are quitting because of e-cigarettes!

Shu-Hong Zhu, the lead researcher on this study, concluded his study by saying;  “Other interventions that occurred concurrently, such as a national campaign showing evocative ads that highlight the serious health consequences of tobacco use, most likely played a role in increasing the cessation rate,”.

"But this analysis presents a strong case that e-cigarette use played a very important role."

Silencing the Critics

This study helps to prove how useful e-cigs can be to helping people to quit smoking. After all E-Cigs have been shown to be the most effective way to quit smoking. But what made it stand out was Zhu's comments in the conclusion of the study. He stated “These findings need to be weighed carefully in regulatory policy making and in the planning of tobacco control interventions”.

This is a fancy way of saying that governments need to realise that E-Cigs are literally saving peoples’ lives! E-cigs helped over 350,000 US citizens in2015 alone!

Across the world the number is even more impressive. In the UK over 1.5 million people have used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, with that number rising every day.
